So the reason this product doesn't work for the Apple dvi converter cables that connect to the laptop, is really Apple's fault. Be aware that if you already have an Apple MiniDisplayPort to DVI converter, or a Mini-dvi to DVI converter, both only feature a 24pin DVI (Macbook Pro, ibook, G4 Powerbook etc that use any of the mini-dvi, mini ports). This is an ok product to convert 29pin DVI to VGA. As much I like the Macs, I hate their strategies on maximizing profits down to the last accessories, even if it increases the inconvenience of the consumer. Basically the analog pins C1-C4 are not carried to the plug of the apple converter making it impossible to use it for any VGA adapter such as this one. You are required to buy another expensive mini-dvi (or mini displayport) to VGA adapter from Apple (and you won't need this handy adapter). This product probably works fine on a Mac Tower with DVI output or older laptops which feature a full regular sized 29 pin DVI. I gave this product only 4 stars because they could point out that it doesn't work on DVI-D connecters.
There really isn't much to say about products like this specifically other than it works. However, there is one thing I appreciated about it and that was the tight connectors, when you use this adaptor all of the connections are tight, the screws and attachments don't spin or jiggle like alot of other pieces I've used in the past.
The screws are all secure and I haven't looked back since. The Startech DVI to VGA display adapter has worked so well I almost forgot I have it. I spent a total of 5 minutes to unpack it, plug into the video card, plug the monitor to it, and reset my display settings. It works like a good sports official. doing the job best when you don't even know it's there.
This handy device allowed me to link my old monitor to my new computer setup, doubling my available desktop space. Just plug to the DVI out and connect to my old VGA monitor. A bargain at twice the price.
Amazon recommended this product. However, it was not needed because the Amazon description of the original video adapter did not indicate this product was included and was not needed.Amazon made and incorrect recommendation.Used Amazon's return label and Amazon charge me $5.02 because they said I choose to reuren instead of Amazon making a mistake. Very poor customer service from Amazon on this purchase.Be very careful on returning Amazon items if Amazon amkes a mistake.
